Rubius Therapeutics is reprogramming red blood cells to treat conditions like cancer, Business Insider reported.
Red blood cells processed in tanks at the labs are “armed” with a therapeutic protein designed to heal specific conditions.
In 2017, the Food and Drug Administration approved two cancer therapies based on removing a patient’s white blood cells, which combat infections and foreign substances, and reengineering them to recognize and eradicate specific cancer cells.
Rubius is developing a similar, but easier to implement treatment with red blood cells. Once developed, the company’s “super-blood” will be used for blood cancers. Later, it may advance to tackle solid tumors and autoimmune diseases, like Type 1 diabetes.
