The United States Postal Service internal watchdog found that inspectors in a special program with law enforcement agencies failed to follow safeguards in handling classified information.

The program, known as mail covers, allows employees to work with members of law enforcement agencies to get names, addresses and other information from letters and packages before they are delivered to an individual suspected of criminal activity.
The Postal Service did not comment on the presence of the program.

According to the report, many requests from law enforcement agencies were processed late which complicated surveillance of the subjects in question. The inspector general also found that employees didn’t have “sufficient controls” in place to ensure that policy was followed. Read more at The New York Times.
