The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force is looking to identify suspects who vandalized a synagogue fence on Staten Island over the weekend, authorities said, 1010 WINS reports.
At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Shabbos, January 21, a white Honda SUV stopped in front of the Congregation Toras Emes of Staten Island Synagogue, located at 3151 Highland Blvd. in Oakwood Heights and a suspect exited from the rear passenger seat of the vehicle and ran through the PVC fence, causing damage to the fence, police said.
According to officials, the suspect then re-entered the rear passenger side of the vehicle, which fled the scene traveling southbound on Highland Boulevard. The suspect who damaged the fence was last seen wearing a yellow hooded sweatshirt and black pants. The driver of the vehicle was wearing a red shirt, while the front seat passenger was wearing a white shirt, authorities said.
An investigation is ongoing.
FYI, the street is Hylan Blvd.
When asked whether he believes the synagogue vandal was an antisemite, and whether the vandalism amounted to a hate crime, a NYC police official told reporters on Monday: “I’m not sure; I’m still on the fence on that one.”
