vote-poll-electionRep. Nydia Velázquez, D-N.Y., won renomination Tuesday for the seat she’s held since 1993. She fended off a challenger backed by the Brooklyn Democratic Party chairman.

Most political handicappers expected Velázquez to cruise to victory due to an endorsement from President Obama and each of New York City’s three major newspapers

But New York City Councilman Erik Martin Dilan tried to topple the incumbent after Brooklyn Democratic Party Chairman Vito Lopez lent his support. But Dilan struggled to compete with the pace of Velázquez’s fundraising.

Velázquez, a 19-year incumbent, is expected to easily win reelection in November.
