The state Senate has passed a bill that would correct the spelling of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge by adding an extra “z” — a move that could cost taxpayers millions if approved.

Signs for the bridge, named for the 16th-century Italian explorer Giovanni de Verrazzano, have been spelled incorrectly for 50 years because of a typo in an original construction contract.

When the state changed the name of the Triborough Bridge to the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge in 2008, it cost more than $4 million to replace more than 100 signs with the new name.

  1. This is as stupid as it gets.
How come WE the taxpayers don’t have a say in this matter? Why should we have to get up early, work hard all day, just to see our efforts go to fund the name of a G-d damn stupid bridge?! The bridge already rips off drivers, with its outrageous fee, every day. This is government dysfunction at its worst!
As an aside, what the hell cost $4,000,000,00+ to change a few metal signs??? Must the City use thee most expensive contractor??? Labor/Unions/Disability/overnight/time in a half, etc… This is total madness. And then the idiots in Gracie Mansion can’t figure out why people are leaving the City/State in droves.
    Who do we speak to?

    • The problem is you’re screaming on here at the 4 walls. The only way to get your fantastic message across is by protests.

  2. As long as it’s someone else’s money, the lawmakers have no problem with fixing spelling errors. When it’s their own mistakes, even egregious ones, then they fight for every dime.
