gilad-shalit[Video below.] Four years after IDF soldier Gilad Shalit was abducted to the Gaza Strip, and after the failure of two rounds of negotiations for his release, his family and supporters have launched a new campaign. The focus of this new effort is to warn us that Shalit’s fate could end up being the same as missing IAF navigator Ron Arad.

The campaign was launched on the day that his parents, Aviva and Noam, met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. After the 15-minute meeting, Noam Shalit said that the UN leader “expressed sympathy, support and understanding for our situation and the nightmare we’re going through.”

Shalit senior also reported that during the meeting, Ban said that he would once again call on leaders around the world to assist in getting Gilad home.

Noam and Aviva are expected to travel to Geneva where they will meet figures from the UN Human Rights Council, the same body that appointed Judge Richard Goldstone to investigate events during Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip. Family members will speak at a special session of the Human Rights Committee and meet with Navanethem (Navi) Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The headquarters of the Free Shalit campaign said that the main purpose of the meeting was to protest the fact that the UN’s criticism of Israel’s implementation of the Goldstone report did not include any mention of Gilad Shalit.
