Firefighters were called at about 3 p.m. today to the Givat Shaul neighborhood in Yerushalayim after receiving a report of a fire at the wholesale market in the neighborhood. A wooden building went up in flames.

The fire spread via roofs made of asbestos, and heavy dust, to nearby buildings and a forest. The hot weather made matters worse.

Highway 1 outside the Sakharov Gardens junction and other local roads were closed to traffic as firefighters battled the blaze.

Police said that ” there is damage to a number of warehouses,” but that no one was trapped or injured.

A second, unrelated fire broke out today in Ramot.

There have been fires all across the country, in Beit Shemesh, in Rishon Letzion, in Petach Tikva, in Tzur Hadassah, in Haifa, in Neve Sha’anan, and elsewhere, with the warm temps causing and exacerbating the dangerous conditions.
