[media id=2086 width=400 height=300] The First World Congress (Knessia Gedolah) of the World Agudath Israel was the first major gathering of all the different sects of Klal Yisroel. It took place in Vienna starting from Elul 3, 5683 / August 15, 1923 and lasted for ten days.

The video shown here, recently released, features rare footage of the Chofetz Chaim at minute 0:58.

  1. The whole copy the next guy thing wasn’t anything like it is today. People were more true to themselves. Another thing is that their personalities and styles were so much better than today! They are well groomed, energetic, formal, friendly, classy and alive in a way that is so lacking in our robotic, copy cat, technology poisoned society. And it was under 100 years ago – not long. Imagine how folks were 200 years ago etc or perhaps the plunge was greater in recent times.

  3. One thing you see is that there’s no need to wear a black hat, at least for the average Jew. A light-colored one is fine. It was August, after all.

This was my experience in (right-wing) yeshivas in the 1960’s. A wide variety of hat styles and colors were acceptable.

We’ve become much more conformist and absolutist since them. Fashion is trivial, of course, but it reflects broader trends.

  4. It’s so beautiful to see, but so sad to see prewar footage. Everyone seemed so normal and safe. How many of those in the video survived the war?

  5. Amazing!!
Can anyone point out some of the people in the video? Maby by the second.
I would also like to point out that at that time it was the norm in European cities to wear a hat regardless who you were.
    Loved it!
Thank you letting us enjoy it!

  8. If they would know that in a 100 years many yidn will be delighted to see them I bet they would even stop to smile for the video.

One of the reasons we’re so delighted is due to fact that these people were completely true to themselves and their beliefs. Their absolute honesty.
