shloime-pollackThe following shiur was delivered at Rabbi Mordechai Perr’s yeshiva in Lakewood, NJ. The maggid shiur is Rabbi Shloime Pollak, Daf Yomi maggid shiur at the Sterling Forest Beis Medrash in Lakewood. The video was taken by Naftali Scheinberg.

The search for the source of Techeiles / Biblical blue wool, has been ongoing for the last century and half. Two of the suggestions are commercially available for Tzitzis, and worn by thousands.The Rebbe of Radzyn (Rav Gershon Henoch Leiner z”l) posited it’s derived from the common cuttlefish.More recently, many believe it comes from the Murex Trunculus.
Much has been discussed and debated. Here is a quick overview.

  1. Read Levush Ha’aron by Meir Hellman, I think most people would be convinced of the authenticity of the murex. Also I believe that Argaman is actually red.

  2. Argaman was actually crimson or a red-purple color made from a different species of snail. Please get your facts straight. Also if you read L’vush Ha’aron you will be convinced that the murex is indeed the chilazon.
