shavuos-On Shavuos at night the minhag is to wait until it is night (Tzeis Hakochavim) to daven Maariv in order to have 49 complete days. Shulchan Aruch w/Mishnah Brurah 494:1
-Likewise, it is preferable for women to wait until it is night to light candles and say Shehechiyanu on Shavuos night. Luach R’ Yechiel Michel Tukatchinsky, Piskei Tshuvos 494:2{[email protected]/Matzav.com Newscenter}

  1. There are other minhagim. I have been told that in general the Sephardim do not wait. Also, apparently this was not the custom in Germany and in the Askenazic congregations in Hungary.

    See the selection at http://personal.stevens.edu/~llevine/maariv_on_shavuous.pdf are taken from the sefer Shorshei Minhag Ashkenaz, volume 4, by Rabbi Benyamin Shlomo Hamburger.

    There you will see that in the time of the Geonim and the Rishonim they did not wait.

    Anyone interested in going back to the old-time religion and having an early minyan on the first night of Shavuous? If you live in Flatbush, then please let me know.

  2. Someone sent me the following regarding davening early Erev Shavuous:

    Good idea, so says R.Yaacov Emden, lamenting the new custom to delay. Apparently the Aruch Ha Shulkan agrees.

    Good enough for me
