Across Wall Street, men are adopting controversial strategies for the #MeToo era such as: no more dinners with female colleagues. Don’t sit next to them on flights. Book hotel rooms on different floors. Avoid one-on-one meetings.

Call it the Pence Effect, after U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who has said he avoids dining alone with any woman other than his wife. In finance, the overarching impact can be, in essence, gender segregation.

In fact, as a wealth adviser put it, just hiring a woman these days is “an unknown risk.” What if she took something he said the wrong way?

Jews for centuries have adopted a similar rule by enacting hilchos Yichud. Interestingly, the gemara related that issur yichud was enacted in after a comparable time period, in the aftermath of the story of Amnon and Tamar.

  1. It shows the problems created by the feminist movement. Instead of them opening doors for women in the worklplace, business owners are afraid to hire them

  2. This is good. Mr. Pence ahead of the problem.

If a woman has ideas, present them through her husband. She should not attempt to tantalize other men with concept or push. She can marry to invest her voice.

It solves too many problems. And thus we have courtesy. There is dream living order and no hunt.

    Smart V.P. It works.

  3. Hilchos Yichud was not enacted. Yichud is forbidden on a Biblical level with a married woman and an unmarried woman who is ritually impure. This fairly includes virtually all women we may encounter in the workplace. The enactment by David HaMelech was only to stretch that prohibition to also include ritually pure umarrried women, something difficult to encounter today. The only time we might be in the presence of such a woman is a bride who went to the Mikvah and is on her way to the Chupah.

The 7 Noachide laws do not ever mention sexual morality. Yet nearly everyone agrees that some sort is necessary in a successful society; non Jews today are NOT idolaters or profligates by convention. Hmmm that’s food for thought. Between the lines there is an indefinable straight way for all men to live; decrees etched in stone, of themselves, cannot quite contain that.
