A routine inspection of the Kosel’s stones started yesterday morning ahead of the tens of thousands of visitors and mispallelim expected to arrive at the Kosel Plaza for the upcoming Yomim Noraim season.

The Western Wall Heritage Foundation conducts a comprehensive manual inspection and maintenance of the Kosel stones twice a year – prior to Pesach and prior to Rosh Hashana. This protects the thousands of visitors who come to Kosel all year long, , as the thorough inspection checks the stones’ stability.

The inspection team, led by engineers, went stone by stone with the aid of a crane and checked the stones’ stability and level of upkeep as part of the ongoing tracking that is updated after every inspection.

The inspection was supervised by the rov of the Kosel, Rav Shmuel Rabinovich, in collaboration with the Israel Antiquities Authority, and the Western Wall Heritage Foundation engineers.

The Western Wall Heritage Foundation is preparing to host the many people who come every year for the central Selichos and the Yomim Tovim of the month of Tishrei. The first Selichos event will take place at the Kosel Plaza on Thursday, 12 Elul, September 8, 2022, starting at 12:15 a.m.

  1. Additional stones were added (about 14 layers) in 1866, paid for by the British philanthropist Sir Moses Montefiore, to stop the stones being thrown by the Arabs from landing on the Jews davening at the wall.

    No change there then.
