Members of Williamsburg’s Jewish community tried to take their safety into their own hands on Monday, as they attended axe-throwing self-defence classes in New York City, in the wake of the recent deadly anti-Semitic shooting in Jersey City.

The classes are led by former NYPD officer and martial arts expert Gary Moskowitz, known as ‘Rabbi Sensei,’ and are designed to teach attendees how to handle a variety of weapons, including axes and spears, as well as how to respond to physical attacks and protect themselves.

Moskowitz explained that his motivation to start the classes was the rise in anti-Semitic attacks, stating that “Synagogues have Nazi swastikas painted on it here, people are cursing at us because we a Jewish, people punch us. Then it goes to terror where people shoot at us and try to kill our children.”

The 62-year-old reportedly started the ‘counter-terrorism’ class for the Orthodox community in wake of the kosher market attack in where four people were killed in Jersey City on December 10.

  1. THIS IS THE DUMBEST MOST REDICULOUS SELF DEFENSE EVER PRESENTED.
FOR A FORMER COP AND RABBI TO TEACH SUCH A FALSE SECURITY IS BEYOND IMAGINATION.
WOULD THIS COP BE PERMITTED TO CARRY AND AXE AS PART OF HIS ARSENAL?

YOU CANT BRING AN AXE INTO AN AIRPORT OR ANY OFFICE BUILDING.
YOU CAN BRING YOUR HANDS AND FEET AND LEARN WHAT AND HOW TO USE THEM.
MANY YEARS AGO A WHITE POWER GROUP WAS ATTACKING YESHIVA STUDENTS IN JERSEY EVERY SUNDAY IN A NEIGHBORHOOD LOT.
RABBI CALLED ME UP. I TAUGHT THE TEENAGERS AND IN 6 MONTHS…NO MORE WHITE POWER GROUP BUT A CONFIDENT GROUP OF YESHIVA BOYS WHO WILL NOT BE PUSHED AROUND ANY LONGER

  2. The headline is wrong. Apparently, axe is just one of the items in Moskowitz’s course. Axe throwing sounds exotic, but this movement can be translated into throwing a hammer, a can of beans or some other heavy object, which is not necessarily designed to take out an opponent, but to create a diversion followed by the rest of self-defense techniques as applicable. Took some classes with Moskowitz decades ago; the guy has what to teach. My advice, though, is to concentrate on obtaining legal gun license and firearms training. It takes a long time to learn how to fight multiple attackers, knife attacks, crazed street people, and sucker punches. It takes much shorter to become proficient enough to defend your home and place of business using firearms. You should study both firearms and self-defense if you have enough time, but if you have time for only one, use your time for the firearms training.

  3. Dacon, don’t be too cocky, son. Learn how to handle yourself, but don’t get overconfident, or you may get yourself involved way above your pay grade. Real life altercations involve guns, drug addicts, knifes, baseball bats, multiple attackers etc. – not a fair octagon fight to say the least. Moskowitz has good things to teach, though personally I think that Jiu-Jitsu is way too complicated for beginners; Krav Maga would be more practical. Most importantly, firearms training should be prioritized as part of the community defense planning, as very few have talent and time to become a Bruce Lee, which still is no match for a lead projectile moving at you at 750 mph.
