“Meron Madness” What an abominable way to describe holy Jews ascending the holy kever of Rashbi.
It is unfortunately true that for too many it has descended into madness, leading to the loss of 45 lives a few years ago. A practice not mentioned in Torah, Talmud, Shulchan Aruch has become a great focus among Hasidics and others. People need to get back to basic Torah.
NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF TENS OF THOUSANDS OF JEWS ASCENDING MERON DID A TRAGEDY HAPPEN.
Before Lag Be’omer 4 years ago, security cameras in Meron were removed WHY????????????
The ramp exit was blocked killing 45 people. Those who were stuck in that exit banged on that wall/door to open it but the resha’im refused. That exit was open every year. You have to be an idiot or simply evil not to understand what happened.
Tells you what kind of people Matzav writers/editors are.
The fire symbolizes ‘Ner Hashem nishmas adam’ – that ‘a person’s soul is the candle of G-d’. While a person is alive, the soul resides within their body. After a person passes away, their soul – which never dies – can be reached through the flame of a candle, which is why we use yahrtzeit candles or disposable candles. If you’re not in Meron at the Tzion of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, or at the grave of a loved one, and wish to connect with them, you can light a candle, recite some Tehillim, or ‘speak’ to them through the candle’s light. A large bonfire allows everyone to ‘speak’ to them from afar.
Which neo-Hasid made up that pshetl?
Madness it is.
Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l, who founded R. Mintz’s yeshiva, did not engage in the bonfire (and related) practice. Rav Moshe’s talmidim, and those that follow in his great ways, should hold fast to that holy tradition, and do likewise.
