He seems quite ignorantly happy, as he should be. The best possible outcome for him is exactly what occurred, since he can always maintain (to himself and perhaps his wife, but still keep his dignity) that had they left him in there, he would have won. Had she won, he would be hard put to claim (to himself, at least) that he could have won as well…
