Tens of thousands filled the Kosel plaza on Sunday night for the central Selichos gathering ahead of Rosh Hashanah 5786, with more than a million having participated in Selichos at the site since the start of Elul.
The service was broadcast internationally, with Argentine President Javier Milei tuning in live from his residence in Argentina.
The event featured the participation of rabbinic and civic leaders, including Sephardic Chief Rabbi Rav Dovid Yosef, Rav Shmuel Rabinowitz, rov of the Kosel and holy sites, Yerushalayim Mayor Moshe Lion, and Argentina’s Ambassador to Israel, Rabbi Shimon Axel Wahnish.
At the start of the service, Rav Rabinowitz led the assembled thousands in a special tefillah of thanksgiving to Hashem for the miracles of the previous year, recalling the Iranian missile assault on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, when safety regulations prevented large crowds from gathering at the Kosel.
Emotional tefillos were also offered for the safe return of the hostages, for comfort and honor for those who fell in battle, for the healing of the wounded, and for the protection and wellbeing of Israel’s soldiers and security forces.
In an unusual moment, President Milei joined the Selichos via live broadcast from the Kosel to his residence. Ambassador Axel Wahnish recited a tefillah on behalf of the president, asking for his success and for the strengthening of friendship between Argentina and Israel.
The next central Selichos gathering at the Kosel is scheduled for Thursday night, the third of Tishrei, at 12:15 a.m., with tens of thousands expected to take part once again.
