  1. If the boiler is on and you have an old fashioned thermostat ( non-digital), or if the non-digital air conditioner is on, can you adjust them to a higher number so they stay on? And the reverse, if the boiler is not on or the air conditioner compressor is not on, can you turn the numbers lower so they stay off longer?
On a regular Shabbos clock, you may pull out the ‘off’ tripper when it is on, so it doesn’t shut off, or pull out the ‘on’ tripper when it is off, so it doesn’t go on.

  2. Interesting that he assumes adjusting (or even turning on) a modern AC is D’Oraissa, like lighting a fire.
Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach and Rav Moshe would not agree, as far as I know.

  3. I was personally told by Rav Yehoshua Neuwirth, the “Shmiras Shabbos Kehilchoso”, that Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach held that electricity which doesn’t create a flame (like the flame in filament light bulbs) is only assur miderabonon (and so is written in his sefer). Furthermore, he shared with me other leniencies regarding turning on an air conditioner on Shabbos that I would rather not write in this forum… I was a maggid shiur in the Mir, have published numerous seforim, and have received numerous semichas as well…
Although Rav Shlomo Zalman didn’t publicly argue with the Chazon Ish’s position regarding electricity, this was merely out of humility, and he paskened for many many people according to the understanding that “chashmal” is only a rabbinic prohibition… With all due respect to this Rabbi, The vast majority of the frum yidden (i.e. Shomer Shabbos, no labels) accept the position of the Shemiras Shabbos Kehilchasa and Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, as that set of seforim has sold more copies than ANY OTHER Halacha sefer and can be found in almost every Jewish home! It is a mistake of this Rabbi to suggest that A/C is a shayla of a deoraisa, it is not.

  4. has sold more copies – this proves virtually nothing
the Jewish public -subscribe generally to the view actually is deoraisa
