The Aufruf Shabbos

Theaufruf was held on Shabbos Parshas Mishpatim-Shekalim, February 13, at the main beis medrash in New Square, the Skverer community in Spring Valley, adjacent to Monsey. The aufruf had the participation of Rabbi Dovid Twersky, Skverer Rebbe, as well as thousands of chassidim that came, many by chartered buses, from Manhattan, Boro Park, Williamsburg, and Lakewood. On Shabbos morning, hundreds of young men, all friends of the chassan, escorted him to the shul with song and dance. Immediately afterward, the chassan recited the Brachos HaTorah, and the same friends encircled him in a spiritedsimcha dance. Theforshpiel was celebrated twice. First, immediately after seudah shlishis, when Shabbos was long over, musical instruments were played, and a second time after Havdalah. The second forshpiel had the additional participation of those that came by chartered buses from Boro Park and Williamsburg.

The traditional Seudas Ani’ im (feast of the poor) was given on Sunday evening in the Heichal Rinah U’Tefillah hall in New Square. The Skverer custom of having the Kabbalas Chasan and Hakafos on the night before the wedding was joyously conducted on Monday evening at the Heichal Rinah U’Tefillah Hall. That same night, thechassan and entourage traveled to the main Vishnitzer Beis Medrash in Monsey to have the Chassan Mohl (meal). Each event had the avid participation of the chassan’s fellow yeshiva students, family, and thousands of chassidim.

At 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, the large doors of the main Skverer Beis Medrash opened wide to allow in the thousands of chassidim that came to partake in the great simcha. The chassan sat regally at the head table, flanked by the important members of chassan and kallah’s families. The plaza in front of the beis medrash was prepared for the noble event.

 The Chuppah

In the late moments of waning daylight on Tuesday, the chassan was escorted by candlelight to the chuppah to await the arrival of the kallah. Right before the wedding berachos, the chassidim chanted songs that have been sung for hundreds of years. A hush enveloped the crowd as the kallah was brought, by her mother and new mother-in-law and their mothers, to the designated space under the chuppah. Again, special songs were sung as the kallah was led in the encirclement of the chassan seven times, stopping at his right side. As the berachos were being recited, the chassan and kallah, and the entire assembly, were in deep meditation. In spite of the cold, thousands of men and women, separately, witnessed the formal ceremony that fused the two families. Literally, the moment’s profound meaning and holiness could be felt, touched, and tasted. As the crack of the glass broken to remember the destruction of the Holy Temple resounded, joyous song broke out and everyone wished each other a warm, deep heartfelt mazel tov.

The Festive Wedding Dinner

The formal dinner was served for men in the main beis medrash, and for the ladies in the nearby Ateres Charna Hall. Thousands and thousands of chassidim stood on line to personally wish the fathers and the grandfathers a mazel tov. From the moment that thechassan entered, the tempo of the music, song, and dance were upbeat. Attempting to bentsch Birkas HaMazon, before 11:00 p.m., became an almost impossible goal. Thousands danced together circling the chassan and the fathers and grandfathers. After bentching, room was made in the main beis medrash for all the ladies that came to view and enjoy the Mitzvah Tantz, when the fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfather individually dance with thekallah, true moments of intense joy, tradition, and history.

 The Week of Sheva Berachos

The schedule of sheva berachos is as follows: Wednesday evening at the Rachmestrivka Beis Medrash of the kallah’s grandfather in Monsey; Thursday evening at the Vishnitzer Yeshiva where the chassan’s father serves as Rosh Yeshiva; Friday, Erev Shabbos, a somewhat private sheva berachos will be conducted in the Skverer Rebbe’s home; Shabbos Parshas Terumah will have the sheva berachos at the main Vishnitzer Beis Medrash with the participation of the Monsey Vishnitzer Rebbe; Motzaei Shabbos will have sheva berachos conducted by the London Skinka Rebbe; Sunday’s afternoon sheva berachos will be led by the chassan’s father; and the Sunday evening sheva berachos is to be grandly celebrated by the Skverer Kehillah.
