david-weprin2Career politician David Weprin (D-WFP) – who has held or run for four separate political offices in the past two years: city council, city comptroller, state assembly (twice), and now congress — cannot vote for himself next Tuesday, September 13th in the special election to replace former congressman Anthony Weiner because Mr. Weprin does not live in the district he is hoping to represent, the campaign of businessman-turned-congressional-candidate Bob Turner (R) today noted.

“Bob Turner will be voting for himself next Tuesday morning; I have no idea what Mr. Weprin will be doing at the time,” said Turner campaign spokesman William O’Reilly. “Mr. Weprin doesn’t live in the Ninth Congressional District, but he I guess he couldn’t resists running to represent it. Mr. Weprin is a professional politician who evidently runs for everything.”

As recently as last week Mr. Weprin was building a re-election website for state assembly, and there are persistent rumors that he will make another run for city comptroller in 2013 – if something else doesn’t open up sooner.

Mr. Turner is a life-long resident of the neighborhoods that make up the Ninth Congressional District. He has been endorsed for Congress by both Republicans and Democrats, including Democratic former New York City Mayor Ed Koch; former Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R); former New York Governor George Pataki (R), and Democratic Assemblyman Dov Hikind (Brooklyn).

  1. Thank you for finally publicizing this embarrassing fact about Mr. Weprin’s residency. In the event that anybody is wondering how he can run to represent a district that he doesn’t even live in…well, the U.S. Constitution only requires that candidates for the House of Representatives be residents of the STATE…residency in any particular congressional district is not required. So Mr. Weprin’s campaign may be perfectly legal…but just because something is “legal” doesn’t always make it “right.” Orthodox Jew or not, his campaign smacks of political expediency, and does not appear to be about representing the people among whom he actually lives.

  2. In his June 15 speech, Weprin said his own Orthodox rabbi would not marry a Jew and a non-Jew, which he felt was wrong – and that same gender marriage was no different.

  3. Therefore what?

I live in the 9th Congressional District. If my neighbor lives, say, five blocks away, but according to the State’s arbitrary lines doesn’t live within the boundaries of NY-9, he shouldn’t be able to represent me?

Oh, I see. So, according to your logic:

If my neighbor lives, say, five blocks away, but according to the State’s arbitrary lines doesn’t live within the boundaries of N.Y.C., he shouldn’t be able to represent me in City Hall?

Or just because he lives a hundred yards away across the Hudson River in New Jersey (another mere “arbitrary” state border) why shouldn’t he be able to run for Congress from my Queens, N.Y.C. district?

    Your logic, reductio ad absurdum!
