Recently disclosed emails reveal that as early as January 2020, Dr. Anthony Fauci had knowledge of extensive coronavirus research being conducted at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. These emails were obtained by U.S. Right to Know through a Freedom of Information Act request and demonstrate that the head of the U.S. COVID-19 response was in communication with other officials regarding the lab’s discoveries.
The Wuhan Institute of Virology, which indirectly received funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases through EcoHealth Alliance’s coronavirus research initiatives in China, has been at the center of speculations concerning the origin of the virus.
At the time of these newly revealed correspondences, Fauci was leading the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). His chief of staff, Greg Folkers, informed Fauci about Wuhan’s identification of 52 novel coronaviruses closely related to SARS, the same family to which SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, belongs. This research also involved the examination of more than 12,000 animals, the discovery of the Swine Acute Diarrheal Syndrome Virus, and the identification of a virus most similar to SARS-CoV-2.
Folkers mentioned that the Wuhan laboratory employed genetically modified mice with organs resembling those of humans to test some of these viruses, resulting in SARS-like illnesses in the mice. Additionally, Folkers highlighted research from the University of North Carolina that revealed the ability of certain novel coronaviruses to attach to human lung, heart, and blood vessel cells.
A spokesperson for the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability’s select subcommittee on the coronavirus pandemic expressed concern about these emails, stating, “Dr. Fauci’s participation in downplaying the lab-leak theory continues to raise further inquiries and doubts about his actions. Americans deserve to hear responses directly from Dr. Fauci.”
