Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv’s eighth yahrtzeit was marked on Monday with tefillos at his kever at Har Hamenuchos in Yerushalayim and gatherings in his memory. Due to the pandemic, the usual mass visits to his kever were canceled this year.
At one online session, Rav Bentzion Hakohen Kook discussed what Rav Elyashiv would have advised during the current Covid-19 crisis. He recalled that when members of a certain Yerushalayim kehillah became fatally ill 10 years ago, Rav Elyashiv stated, “I think that Chazal explicitly stated that the advice for this terrible disease is [to stop] denigration of talmidei chachomim,” citing the Gemara (Shabbos 119b) which states, “Whoever denigrates talmidei chachomim, there is no cure for his blow.”
“This applies even more now as we all suffer in fear of a murderous plague that has no cure r”l,” he said.
