The MTA announced that the Staten Island-bound lower level of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge will be closed this Sunday, May 5, from 12:01 a.m. until 6 p.m. for the annual Five Boro Bike Tour. The upper level of the bridge will remain open throughout the event.

One Brooklyn-bound lane on the lower level will be closed from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m., and the Bay Street Exit will be closed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The BQE approach (I-278) to the bridge will close from 9:30 a.m. until 6 p.m., and the 92nd Street exit ramp to the Staten Island-bound lower level, as well as the Belt Parkway entrance ramp to the lower level, will be closed from 12:01 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Traffic exiting the Hugh L. Carey (formerly Brooklyn-Battery) Tunnel in Brooklyn will be diverted to Hamilton Avenue between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and the Trinity Place exit in Manhattan will also be closed between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

The ramp to the FDR Drive from the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge will be closed between 7:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. All Manhattan-bound traffic must exit at 125th Street.

  1. Will the corrupt MTA be charging these goody two shoes, save the earth, runners for crossing the bridge?

  2. They are not runners, they are bicycle riders. Perhaps some run too.

The bridge should have permanent year-round bicycle and pedestrian path(s), as many other bridges do, such as (locally in NYC area) the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge, George Washington Bridge, Marine Park Bridge, Cross Bay Bridge, Queensboro Bridge, Triborough Bridge. The old plan for the VZ, when it was built, included such access in it.
