The White House press office on Tuesday launched a strong criticism of what it referred to as the “hoax machine” driven by mainstream media, exposing and dismissing the fake news that has been circulating at “rapid speed” since President Donald Trump took office. The office argued that misinformation has been emerging consistently over the past couple of weeks, with claims that needed to be corrected.
In an email titled “Fake News: Hoax Machine Keeps Running,” the White House press office took aim at four specific recent claims promoted by Democratic lawmakers and legacy media outlets. These claims, the office asserted, were entirely false and needed to be addressed.
One of the claims came from Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., who stated that the Trump administration had eliminated the ability to file taxes for free. The press office immediately refuted this assertion, calling it “an easily debunked lie.” It pointed out that the official IRS Direct File website remained active and was still accepting tax returns. The press office emphasized that this was such a blatant falsehood that even the Associated Press had to acknowledge that “the free filing program is still available.”
Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., also made headlines this week by comparing the Trump administration to a “dictatorship” following its move to shut down the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The White House swiftly responded, clarifying that the decision to end U.S. taxpayer funding for initiatives such as transgender comic books in Peru, DEI programs in Serbia, and transgender operas in Colombia, was far from being “akin to a ‘dictatorship’.” Instead, the White House emphasized that it was a matter of holding “unelected bureaucrats accountable for their spending decisions.”
A third story the White House addressed involved media reports suggesting that operatives from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) were attempting to gain access to secure government spaces. The White House was quick to dismiss the reports, with White House Communications Director Steven Cheung declaring that they were “FAKE NEWS” and “Not even remotely true at all.” Additionally, top DOGE adviser Katie Miller remarked that “no classified material was accessed without proper security clearances.”
Lastly, the White House responded to an independent report that alleged DOGE had “illegally installed a commercial server to control federal HR databases that contain sensitive personal information.” The White House rebutted the claim, with Miller asserting, “there is ‘nothing illegal and no server, just more made up tall tales from uninformed career bureaucrats who probably telework.'”
