The United States initially portrayed the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar by Israel as a potential catalyst to revive stalled hostage negotiations. However, in the five days following Sinwar’s death, there has been no progress in restarting such talks, according to White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby.
“I cannot sit here today and tell you that negotiations are about to restart in Doha or Cairo or anywhere else, but we have started to begin to think about it here and have had some initial conversations with our Israeli counterparts,” Kirby stated.
Meanwhile, US special envoy Amos Hochstein is currently in Beirut, engaging in discussions with Lebanese officials. The goal of these talks, as Kirby explained, is to explore “what could be in the realm of the possible in terms of trying to find a meaningful ceasefire” between Israel and Hezbollah.
