Gaza’s only piano was seized by a man claiming to be its owner. This happened after Belgian volunteers lovingly repaired it for Gaza’s only music school.
Merchant Saed Herzallah says he bought the piano, originally donated by Japan, with the contents of abandoned resort that closed down after Hamas took over in 2007. The piano was almost destroyed in airstrikes during Israeli retaliation against rocket fire in 2008 and 2014.
Gaza’s culture minister accused Herzallah of “piracy” and said the ministry will do “everything possible” to get the piano back.
