hillaryThree years ago she was nursing her wounds after failing to win the Democratic presidential nomination. But today the tables have turned-Hillary Clinton is by far the most popular national political figure, according to a new poll.

Clinton is thought of favourably by nearly two-thirds of Americans, according to the Bloomberg National Poll.

In what will be seen as a further blow to Obama, trailing in second place as approval ratings plummet, one-third say the U.S. would be better off now if she had become president in 2008.

Support for Clinton has increased since July 2010 when a quarter of Americans held such a view, according to the survey.

Clinton, 63, a former first lady and U.S. senator from New York, fought with Obama for the Democratic nomination until June 2008, in what was often a combative primary that included her questioning his presidential readiness.

34 percent say things would be better under a Clinton administration, almost half — 47 percent — say things would be about the same and 13 percent say worse.

Obama’s job approval rating stands at the lowest of his presidency, 45 percent, the poll shows.

Republicans are slightly more inclined than the national average to think the U.S. would be better off with Clinton running the country, with 39 percent saying so. A majority of Democrats — 57 percent — say things would be the same.

Hillary’s traditional area of strength has been international affairs. But foreign policy is one of the only areas in which Obama scores well in this poll.

42 percent approve of his job performance on Libya, while 65 percent condone his efforts on terrorism, including capture and killing Bin Laden in May.

44 percent of Tea Party supporters say the U.S. would be better off with Hillary Clinton as president, even though 59 percent of those respondents have an unfavourable impression of her overall.

Joseph Cherney, 67, a retired Republican automotive purchasing worker from Mineral Ridge, Ohio said: ‘She’s a more stable person who gets results. The president we have now isn’t much of a president because he really doesn’t do anything. He’s pompous and arrogant.’

All age groups hold favourable views of Clinton, although she is most popular with those aged 65 years and older, 68 percent in that group holding a favourable view.

She is also more likeable to women than men, with 68 percent holding a favourable view, compared to 59 percent of men.

Ninety percent of Democrats like Clinton, compared to 35 percent of Republicans and 63 percent of independents.

Those in the northeast U.S. are her biggest backers, with 77 percent there holding a favourable view, compared to 59 percent in the South and West and 64 percent in the Midwest.

Other politicians in the poll included another former would-be president John McCain the Republican nominee in 2008.

But just 29 percent say things would be better if McCain were president, while 28 percent say things would be about the same and 35 percent say the nation would be in worse shape.

McCain’s figures are virtually unchanged from last year’s poll.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney said last week that democrats might have been better off if she had been nominated.

In an interview with Fox News he said: ‘I have the sense that she’s one of the more competent members of the current administration, and it would be interesting to speculate about how she might perform were she to be president.’ he said.

But Clinton said she had ‘below zero,’ interest in challenging Obama.

Clinton said: ‘One of the great things about being Secretary of State is I am out of politics. I am not interested in being drawn back into it by anybody.’

  1. Biden took vp after being offered choice between vp & SOS. Clinton was to receive whichever spot was left by Biden as available. Ironic that had Clinton become vp there is no way her ratings would be this good.

  2. Clarifier is correct. And if she had been president, as well as anyone, during this economy, their poll numbers would be low. Only HASHEM can help us.

  3. Yiden, don’t vote for Hillary.
Hillary C. = Barak O. Neither one has integrity and morality. If there is any difference, that’s that Hillary is more perfid and dangerous. And she knows how to camouflage her perfidy. For the sake of Eretz Israel and the Yiden that live there, vote for neither one of them.

  4. It’s a good thing Hilary Clinton has no interest in being president, because if she were to challenge Obama she would win the nomination AND the election.
