At the Seminar Hayoshon in Yerushalayim, a remarkable scene unfolded as students took off their shoes and walked barefoot upon discovering that their TOMS footwear contained shatnez.
The event unfolded when one student alerted her peers about the presence of shatnez in her shoes. This prompted Rav Yisroel Levin, the principal, to make an announcement over the public address system. In no time, countless students followed suit, removing their shoes to adhere to the halachic guidelines and opting to walk without them.
Rabbi Levin shared his pride regarding the swift and resolute reaction of the students.
“It was touching to see the girls proudly remove their shoes without a second thought once they heard about the prohibition,” Rabbi Levin remarked, illustrating how the students discarded their shoes and quickly organized alternative options, including makeshift footwear crafted from cardboard.
Some girls even chose to walk home without their shoes. Others sought out borrowed footwear from friends or purchased thick socks for added comfort.

That did happen, except the rav then did his research and has had trouble finding shatnez in any Toms shoes.
Mi ke’amcha Yisroel?
The girls reaction is highly admirable, however this practice of everyone wearing the same brand of shoe like a flock of sheep needs to stop!
“In 2003, a Jewish doctor named Heidi Yellen conducted a study on the frequencies of fabric.
According to this study, the human body has a signature frequency of 100, and organic cotton is also the same. The study showed that if the number is lower than 100, it actually puts a strain on the body. A diseased, nearly dead person has a frequency of about 15, and that is where polyester, rayon, and silk register. Nonorganic cotton registers a signature frequency of about 70.
If the fabric has a higher frequency, it gives energy to the body. This is where linen comes in as a super-fabric. Its frequency is 5,000. Wool is also 5,000, but when mixed together with linen, the frequencies cancel each other out and fall to zero.
Even wearing a wool sweater on top of a linen outfit in a study collapsed the electrical field. The reason for this could be that the energy field of wool flows from left to right, while that of linen flows in the opposite direction, from right to left.”
Here in the States we have an expression that can be applied
to those girls who chose to walk in shoeless but stockinged
feet, “Sock it to ’em !”. Humor aside, it was a tremendous
Kiddush Hashem !
This is a great Kiddush Hashem for those who understand the issur involved. For people who are not frum it seems bizarre. More effort must be expended in explaining Torah and mitzvos.
I asked a local Shatnez tester about this. He wrote:
“They mistakenly thought it was Shatnez since the label said wool and it has a linen look. Lesson: it’s always important to test sometimes the result may be positive. But in actuality, Toms shoes currently have no shaatnez concerns.”
Another site writes:
“In the following days it was reported that several girls sent their shoes for testing and received similar responses regarding the Shaatnez issues with them.”
Which implies there *is* actually a problem with these shows.
Wasn’t this a tik tok challenge in2022?
