Why Did the Rebbe Wear Two Different Shtreimels During Erev Pesach Matzah Baking?

In a meticulous display of hiddur mitzvah, the Rebbe of Rachmastrivka was seen donning two different shtreimels during the Erev Pesach matzah baking after chatzos hayom on Erev Shabbos.

As the Rebbe entered the matzah bakery to personally participate in the baking of matzos, he wore an older shtreimel for the physical labor of kneading and rolling. Then, the Rebbe stood near the oven and recited Hallel with great dveikus. Before doing so, however, he changed into a different shtreimel.

The reason? Out of an abundance of caution, the Rebbe was concerned that tiny crumbs of flour or dough—potentially turning into chametz—might have remained on the original shtreimel worn during the baking. To avoid any halachic issue during the recitation of Hallel, he switched to a second, clean shtreimel.

  1. Can somebody explain what is the hiddur of matzos made after chatzos when it’s not actually erev pesach?
The halachic source of erev pesach matzos is Rashi, who holds that the matzos need to be made erev pesach in order to use them for matzas mitzvah. However, according to Rashi, this year they would need to be made motzaei Shabbos, before beginning the seder.

  2. Now we will have rain shtreimel, Chametz one and Pesach one. Minhag Avoseinu will make this mandatory for all along the rules of being “Holier than Thou” and keeping up with the Joneses.
All because some puretz in 1500’s Europe wore a fur hat that has now morphed into teased, very tall, fur hats that no one in the 16th century would recognize. Likely no one in the 1800’s would recognize either.
“The Evolution of the Shtreimel” would make a good PHD paper dissertation for someone going for a doctorate in Jewish Studies.
Next- highlights. Red and blonde depending on your Yichus. But not rainbow colors under any circumstances.
