During her initial briefing since President Biden decided to end his re-election campaign due to questions about his mental sharpness, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre affirmed Wednesday that Biden remains mentally sharp and “absolutely” capable of serving another term.
“Look, he didn’t step down from campaigning or from running because he didn’t believe he can serve in a second term. That is not why,” Jean-Pierre stated, leaving journalists astonished.
Jean-Pierre explained that the 81-year-old president’s choice to withdraw and support Vice President Kamala Harris, 59, was in the “best interest” of the nation and the Democratic Party. She urged viewers to “stay tuned” for a more detailed explanation from Biden in an Oval Office address at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
“So today, the president believes that he is capable, fully capable of serving in the office that he currently has now and for the next 4.5 years if he wanted to?” an Associated Press journalist queried.
“Absolutely,” Jean-Pierre affirmed.
Shortly after, another reporter questioned, “Why is it in the country’s best interest for him to step aside? Does it have to do with his health?”
“It has nothing to do with his health,” Jean-Pierre insisted. “The president’s going to speak to this directly to the American people tonight in prime time.”
When asked about claims that Biden’s team had concealed his cognitive state, she maintained, “it is not a coverup” and dismissed the idea that he should resign before his term concludes in January as “ridiculous.”
Despite Jean-Pierre’s assertions about Biden’s capabilities, his decision to withdraw was directly linked to doubts about his mental acuity, especially following a poor debate performance on June 27 where he appeared confused and made comments such as claiming he “finally beat Medicare.”
Biden further fueled concerns about his mental fitness on July 11 when he mistakenly introduced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to NATO leaders as “President Putin” of Russia and later referred to Kamala Harris as “Vice President Trump” at a press conference.
Prominent Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and former President Barack Obama, expressed their preference for Biden to step aside to avoid a potential landslide defeat that could also impact other Democratic candidates.
Concerns about Biden’s age were prevalent even before the debate debacle. A February ABC/Ipsos poll revealed that 86% of respondents believed Biden is too old for another term, while a March Siena College/New York Times survey showed 73% held the same view.
