According to reports from state media, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has issued a directive for his military to “thoroughly annihilate” the United States and South Korea in the event of provocation. This comes as Kim pledges to enhance national defenses in response to what he perceives as an unprecedented confrontation led by the United States.

Anticipated to escalate weapons tests in 2024, Kim aims to bolster North Korea’s military capabilities, potentially viewing an expanded nuclear arsenal as a means to extract concessions from the United States, especially if former president Donald Trump secures reelection in the upcoming November US presidential election.

During a recent meeting with high-ranking army officers, Kim emphasized the urgent need to sharpen “the treasured sword” to ensure national security, a likely reference to North Korea’s nuclear weapons program. The official Korean Central News Agency reported Kim’s concern over “the US and other hostile forces’ military confrontation moves.”

Kim underscored the gravity of the situation, stating that “our army should deal a deadly blow to thoroughly annihilate them by mobilizing all the toughest means and potentialities without a moment’s hesitation” if faced with military confrontation or provocations from the US and other perceived hostile forces, as indicated by KCNA.
