  1. Now, how many of us assumed – since this story is on this website – that a 32-year-old woman from Woodmere must be a frum Jewish mamale not using her head?

Here’s the same story with more details:

    ——
Nassau County police arrested a 32-year-old Woodmere woman who is accused of leaving a toddler in a car while she shopped at Walmart in Valley Stream.

Alona Sulman, 32, of Wood Street left the 2 1/2-year-old girl in the car for at least 30 minutes while she shopped at the Valley Stream store, police said.

Sulman was arrested at 2:15 p.m. Saturday and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, police said.

The uninjured child was released to her father, who was not identified by police, while Sulman was issued a ticket to appear at District Court in Hempstead on Dec. 17, police said.

Let’s assume that the vibele did not go for a drive after yesterday’s cholent.

So why is this story on Matzav? It’s not a Jewish interest story, is it?

  2. Outraged, why should Matzav only print Jewish related stories? Would you like it if non Jewish publications deliberately avoid reporting Jewish related stories? You seem to have an element of racism and bigotry inside of you

  3. To Outraged (comment #1): you are absolutely correct. I too assumed from the headline, “Woodmere Mother…,” that this was about a senseless and negligent frum woman. After all, Matzav.com’s motto is “the Jewish world @ your fingertips.” Of course, this story has NOTHING whatsoever to do with the Jewish world. The implication of the headline is deceptive, and the story in-and-of-itself doesn’t belong here. It should be removed.

  4. RESPONSE TO #1 & 6
And what’s wrong if we get a reminder of the risk we face daily in our hectic schedules??
We can learn from ANYONE’S tzoros.

  5. #1- It’s called yellow journalism, the reader assumes this is a “community” story, and this page receives more hits. Most people don’t use this site for non-jewish related news, certainly not five towns stories. Keep it this way Matzav.

  6. #3 & #4, Matzav “The Jewish World @ Your Fingertips” does not run every news story out there, only ones of Jewish interest. Unfortunately – and Hashem yerachem on our kinderlach and ALL children – hundreds of these tragedies happen each year without appearing on Matzav or the other frum news sites. What I’m saying is that they picked up this story from somewhere on the web because it was about a young woman in Woodmere that gave no name. If it had happened in Kansas, they would not have picked it up. And I also think that if they had done a little digging and seen that it happened on Shabbos, they also would not have bothered with it.

Basically, I’m accusing Matzav of lazy journalism.

  7. The most important part of this story is “discount retailer”. What a key and majorly important point that is. Really sheds a lot of light on this story. I guess the recession has hit Woodmere as well.

  9. thank you, #1 for adding your comments. Of course, I assumed that she was frum. However, Alona can be an Israeli name, so the woman may still be Jewish. It was important to hear this story and be shaken out of complacency for when we take care of our precious children.

  10. I am reminded of the story of the cheder teacher who asked a little girl, “How do you know it’s shabbos?” The girl replied, “That is the day when my father leaves his car in our garage and goes by bus”. Don’t ask me why I was reminded of this maaseh.

  11. #7, Matzav.coms motto has nothing to do with it. They WILL give you “The Jewish World @ Your Fingertips”, but that might not be ALL they gave you. Do you not read the articles about general news too? Its a news site, they report NEWS.
    ________

Why does the Wal-mart in Valley Stream seem to be a hot spot for news this time of year?

  12. To #16: Read comments number 9 & 10. They answer you well.

I don’t expect Matzav.com to be my “general news” source. For that there is CNN, AOL, NY Times Online, etc. etc. ad nauseam.

I think that the editor saw “Woodmere” and published this piece using an intentionally misleading headline — intimating a ‘frum’ scandal — to draw in Jewish readers. Sorry, I don’t find this to be responsible journalism.

  13. I will take this posting and show to a few Rosh Yeshivas to show them what type of Sinas Israel Matzav is creating. Shame shame shame.
I will post this in shuls all over Brooklyn.

  14. I’ll try to clarify my point, again: Of course there’s room for outside news on a Jewish site if it has a message for us. But to post a story that intentionally misleads in order to stir up a scandal is disgusting. And if we are to be dan l’chaf z’chus that they did not try to mislead anyone but merely copied the story because their searchers (automated or human) saw the word “Woodmere” – well, that’s just irresponsible, lazy, and/or yellow journalism.

  15. Thumbs up to the Woodmere police! For far too long people have been exceedingly careless with the safety of their children: letting them run ten feet ahead of them or ten feet behind the the parent(s) when walking on the street, leaving them alone in a car parked out in a shopping center parking lot, leaving them alone in a room with an open door, letting them play alone in the yard, and even leaving them alone in the house while the parents go off on a vacation!

Arguements like “This is a good neighborhood” or “nobody’s going to do that” or “I’m just going to be a minute” are totally meaningless in view of severely wicked sick criminals who manage to get themselves all over, move extremely fast, and have no hesitations on even the most sadistic acts.

Even without the problem of criminals, R’L, there are countless potentially life threatening hazards, R’L, around every house, which thus necessitates CONSTANT proper adult supervision of children.

I was once privileged to stay in the home of the Chabad Sh’liach in Boulder, Colorado. Among the several Torahdike videos he had for his children was one about safety. At the opening of the presentation was the following statement: “I’M MOSHIE THE CLOWN, BUT WHEN IT COMES TO SAFETY, THERE’S NO CLOWNING AROUND!!”

Im Yirtza HaShem, this incident in Woodmere should be a wake-up call for people to start giving the issues of safety the seriousness that is due.

  16. To Mr. or Mrs. Outraged in comment #1: The extremely serious issues of safety, which are brought out by this story and which I just elaborated on in the last comment FULLY APPLY TO ALL OF US!!

It is thus totally fitting that the story is reported here.
