Researchers in Egypt discovered a 3,200-year-old container filled with a whitish mass described as “probably the most ancient archeological solid residue of cheese ever found to date.” It was collected during excavations in the 13th century BCE Tomb of Ptahmes.

Analysis showed that the cheese was infected with deadly Brucella melitensis bacteria when fresh. This could infect eaters with Mediterranean fever.
