kidney-donationA surgeon at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City has been relieved of his duties after removing the wrong kidney from a patient, hospital officials said.

The patient was a 76-year-old man on dialysis with two diseased kidneys when the wrong one was removed, the hospital said. Doctors later removed the failed kidney and a hospital spokesperson said the patient is doing well.

“This event should never have occurred at Mount Sinai,” said spokeswoman Dorie Klissas. “We apologized to the patient, and we will do all we can to ensure that something like this never happens again.”

It is unclear when the incident occurred and the name of the surgeon has not been released.

  1. These sorts of things happen frequently. There are check lists and team procedures to prevent them, but those only work if you use them. That it’s Mt. Sinai is a disgrace. Read “The Checklist Manifesto” by A. Gawande to find out about how this sort of tragedy is usually prevented.

  2. # 1-He was on dialysis anyway – obviously his kidneys were not working.
(I’m not saying that it was not a big deal)

  3. #1, we live in a democratic country! Madam Hillary did the same thing about the unfortunate deaths in Bengazi and it seems the country gave her a pass!
    We wreak!

  4. I think mount sinai hospital should be closed down ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!!! I was a patient there and could do a whole book of the HORRIBLE service and mistakes, nontreated patients, i dont know where to start telling my BAD BAD experience I had in that hospital!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. just because this mistake had happened in mount sinai means nothing! this couldve happened anywhere! so just because you chose to go there and wasnt treated as you felt you should has nothing to do with this doctor! and you never know maybe it was someone else who checked which kidney should be removed. and btw hes on dialasis and as we know hes still alive!!
    ad meiah vesrim shanah!
