japan-yaakov-yosefYaakov Yosef ben Raizel continues to languish in a Japan jail after the Tokyo High Court failed to overturn the ruling of the district court back in May, but Matzav.com has learned that Yaakov Yosef may be granted extradition to Israel in the near future.

Yaakov Yosef is currently serving a six-year sentence, of which 814 days was deducted by a judge back in May.

The prosecution initially demanded a 13-year sentence. A sentence of 6 years was handed down in the district court, in addition to a monetary fine of 4 million ¥, the equivalent of $50,000.

The verdict of six years was based on the fact that the judges found reason to accuse that Yaakov Yosef should have suspected something was amiss, and although he had no clear knowledge of any contraband, there was negligence on his part for not being more cautious. The judge claimed that the polygraph examination, while outruling clear knowledge, did not prove lack of suspicion. The defense attorneys were dismayed at the callous nature of the judge’s dismissal of the defense arguments.

According to Israeli protocol, one-third of the full sentence can be deducted, and the remaining time can also be commuted as per their discretion. Yaakov Yosef could thus be out of prison within 5 months from now if he is transferred to Israel.

All are asked to continue davening for Yaakov Yosef ben Raizel.

Back in August, Yoel Goldstein, was found innocent by the Chiba District Court in Japan.

Yosef Bando, the youngest of the three bochurim arrested in Japan back in 2008, was sentenced on April 30, 2009, to 5 years in jail in Japan. He was subsequently granted his lawyers’ request for him to serve the remainder of his sentence in his home country. He later had his sentenced commuted by Israel and was released.
