yair-lapidIsraeli Deputy Foreign Minister Ze’ev Elkin of the Likud Beiteinu party sharply criticized Israeli Finance Minister Yair Lapid on Wednesday for his comments stating that Palestinians do not need to recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

In an interview with Charlie Rose on Bloomberg Television on Tuesday, Lapid said, “I don’t feel we need a declaration from the Palestinians that they recognize Israel as a Jewish state… The whole concept, to me, of the State of Israel is that we recognize ourselves, that after 2,000 years of being dependent on other people.”

But Elkin believes that the root of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the fact that the Palestinians do not recognize Israel’s right to exist, the same position expressed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a major address at Bar-Ilan University on Oct. 6. Until the Palestinians make this recognition, “any peace agreement will become just another step in [former Palestinian Authority chairman Yasser] Arafat’s infamous staged plan to throw us in the sea,” Elkin said, according to the Jerusalem Post.

  1. No Lapid fan here though many understand first Rashi that it is up to is to realize that EY is ours. That being said, if official recognition of Israel by the Palestinians will contribute to the security ofYidden, then yes we do need a recognition.

  2. Shalom Yair.
Your idea is somewhat interesting. Perhaps we do not “shove upon them” the right that they must “absolutely agree” that our People are on our way to our future. If not, then perhaps we should ask the palestinian people to simply move out. They do not need to recognize us and we do not need to worry where they sleep at night. Let them find a new home.

  3. EITHER THEORY WILL WORK
NEITHER THEORY WILL COME TO BE

ALL PALISITINANS AS DECLARED BY THE ROMANS AND THEN BRITISH 1920 ANS 1947 ARE JEWISH.

    ALL ARABS ARE ARABS

ALL ARABS SHOULD HAVE THEIR HOME LAND ACCEPT THEM BACK..EGYPT AND SYRIA.

THE ARABS THAT WERE NOMADS IN 1947/48 FOLLOWING JEWS FOR WORK SHOULD JOIN COMMUNITY SERVICE IN ZIMBAMWA
or go to their parents home, again in egypt or syria.

ITS AN ARAB MIND GAME. They refuse to recognize ISRAEL EXISTING BECAUSE
those arabs in fact do not exist themselvs
so they counter attack with what they are themselves…
Non existant people on a imaginary non existent land of a non existant imaginary history

  4. Lapid looks at it according to his view. He doesn’t need a Jewish state why enforce it upon the PA? He’d anytime switch all religious Jews with Arabs.

  5. How does Matzav.com shamelessly post the picture of this rasha merusha sonai yisrael shr”y? How can you talk objectively about his statements and feelings (even if he’s being criticized by some other (albeit to a lesser degree) rasha)? Any poison/toxic waste coming forth from the mouth of this snake is not it for print!!!

  6. I certainly not a lapid fan, but Menachem Begin A”H said the same thing. You’re interpreting it wrong. He’s saying that Israel doesn’t get its legitimacy because the PLO gives it to them, Israel exists whether PLO likes it or not. Israel’s right to exist is because Hashem gave it to us all those years ago and nothing the Arabs say changes that reality.
This is actually one of the most right wing and religious statements I’ve ever heard lapid say

  7. To David Lefkowitz: This is not meant to defend the rasha Lapid, but the Rashi at the beginning of Bereshis was not referring to when we are in golus. We were exiled from Eretz Yisroel, and, as far as I know, Mashiach has not arrived. There is still a mitzvah to live in Israel, and I am all for living there, but that does not mean that we have a legal claim on it as far as that Rashi is concerned.
