Yehuda Alkabetz, born in the village of Sakhnin, always knew he was different. People called him Muhammad al-Jamil, but his friends who wanted to tease him would yell “Yehud Ruch Man HaDa.” He often asked himself, “Being called a Jew – how does this derogatory nickname relate to me?”

As he grew up, he realized that there was probably something behind these calls.

When he finished his school years, he went to work in the center of the country, as was customary in the village where he grew up. He engaged in a variety of handicrafts.

After a few days out of his Arab village, he decided to take the opportunity and clarify his identity. He found a page with phone numbers in his mother’s handwriting, and took advantage of the quiet moments and quickly copied them and went out for another day of work.

He dialed the phone numbers he copied, and on the line was a Jewish woman. He was her sister’s son, and there were two more aunts who were very happy to contact him.

He learned that he is the son of a Jewish mother, and not only that, but he belong to a privileged family – his mother’s family descends from Rav Shlomo Alkabetz, famed composed of Lecha Dodi!

That began a long journey back to his roots.

Today, Yehuda is a frum Jew. He fled his Arab village, but not without enduring years of torment.

This past Thursday night, b’chasdei Hashem, Yehuda got married surrounded by friends and family.

And the most popular song at the wedding was, of course, Lecha Dodi, the words written by his elter zaide, his great-grandfather from centuries back, the famed mekubal Rav Shlomo Alkabetz.

  1. Something was lost in translation here:
“but he belong to a privileged family”

The word “privileged” is not the right word; neither he nor his family have any unique “privilege”. They are, however, from a “distinguished” family or whatever other appropriate word you wish to use.

  2. In other words, his mother is living in an Arab village, “married” to a gentile (Arab), thanks to Zionist shmad/intentional destruction of Judaism.

Yet another tragedy of Zionism. But the Zionist idol lives on.

    • You are absolutely right! Outside of Israel, Jews never marry goyim.
Only in Israel, because of the wicked Zionists, the intermarriage rate among secular Jews is less than 1%.

  3. Is he the same einikel in the story where someone invited a guy to their Friday night seuda but wanted to constantly sing Lecha Dodi and then found out he was from Ramallah but he had a photo of his ancestor’s kever…?
