Israel Rail informed the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange that due to safety regulations, the opening of the Yerushalayim-Tel Aviv high-speed rail line will be delayed until September or October.

“It is inconceivable that a delay is authorized for regulatory reasons, while whenever a delay is caused by Shabbos observance, a cry goes out that delaying the work will cause pikuach nefesh,” MK Yaakov Asher of UTJ said.

Supposed to open in 2008 at the cost of $1 billion, the line’s opening was delayed for almost a decade as its cost doubled.

With a cruising speed of 100 mph, the train will hopefully cut the 35-mile journey between the two cities from an hour to 28 minutes.
