ein-gedi-bochurA 17-year-old yeshiva bochur hiking with his friends today near Ein Gedi fell off a cliff, plunging some 30 meters. Miraculously, he survived, though he suffered severe wounds. Rescue volunteers spent hours trying to rescue him, until a helicopter arrived. The Air Force helicopter rescue unit took the bochur to Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center in Yerushalayim.

Askanim have continuously warned the chareidi community to use caution when taking trips and hiking, especially in less familiar areas.

  1. Indeed, baruch HaShem that this young man’s life was saved.

However, I wonder if this bochur, and his fellow hikers, bothered to check with the Israel Society for the Protection of Nature or the local National Oark authorities on which routes are dangerous? Did they remember to read the explanatory signs and sign posts that dot the park?

Very importantly, were the avreichim wearing suitable footwear? Wearing smooth, leather-soled, shoes on the slippery rocks is courting disaster.

I sincerely hope and pray that these lads were each carrying at least two litres of water with them at all times. Dehydration is rapid in the dry and hot atmosphere of the Dead Sea region.

The Ein Gedi National Park is quite big (by Israeli stadards), and the rangers cannot be everywhere at all times.

Todah le’KBH that these boys are safe and well.
