Israel’s Judicial Selection Committee officially named Justice Yitzchok Amit as the new President of the Israeli Supreme Court on Sunday, as had been anticipated.
However, Minister of Justice Yaiv Levin, along with coalition committee members Minister Orit Strock and MK Yitzchok Kroizer, chose to boycott the vote.
In response to the appointment, Justice Minister Levin communicated to the court’s director that he does not recognize Justice Amit’s election as Supreme Court President. He stated, “As long as a President is not elected for the Supreme Court in a proper process according to the law and the powers granted to the Judicial Selection Committee and its chairman, the actions that require cooperation between the Supreme Court President and the Justice Minister will not be able to be taken.”
Levin concluded by declaring, “Therefore I hereby unequivocally announce that I do not recognize the Hon. Justice Yitzchok Amit as President of the Supreme Court and the process in which he was ‘elected’ is fundamentally invalid and illegal,” in his written statement.
