young-israel-logoThe National Council of Young Israel (NCYI) today called on new Israeli Prime Minister Binyomin Netanyahu to take the necessary steps to fortify the State of Israel, secure its borders, and reject calls for an independent Palestinian state. Ina letter sent to Prime Minister Netanyahu, National Council of Young Israel President Shlomo Z. Mostofsky and Executive Vice President Rabbi Pesach Lerner set forth a number of issues of import relative to the future of the Jewish State, and asked that the Prime Minister keep these issues at the forefront of his agenda during his tenure as Prime Minister.

The following is the text of the letter that was sent to Prime Minister Netanyahu by the National Council of Young Israel:

National Council of Young Israel
11 John Street, Suite 450
New York, New York 10038

April 1, 2009

Honorable Benjamin Netanyahu
Office of the Prime Minister
3 Kaplan Street
Jerusalem, Israel 91950

Dear Prime Minister Netanyahu:

On behalf of our more than 25,000 member families, and over 200 branch synagogues throughout the United States, Canada, and Israel, we are writing to wish you a heartfelt Mazal Tov on you once again becoming the Prime Minister of the State of Israel. With a large and active presence in Eretz Yisrael, the National Council of Young Israel extends to you our blessing for a successful and productive term in office.

During your term in office, we respectfully urge to you stay true to the positions that you consistently advocated during your long and illustrious career. While external forces may call upon you to take a conciliatory approach towards the Palestinians, we implore you to stand firm and reject any pressure to accede to calls for the creation of a Palestinian state. We believe that an independent Palestinian state would merely compound the complex problems that currently exist and open the door to a new wave of acts of terror directed at innocent Israeli civilians.

In addition, we ask that you remain steadfast in your position that Jerusalem remains the undivided and eternal capital of the State of Israel. We believe that you agree that there are no circumstances which can justify partition of any portion of Jerusalem. You previously voiced your disagreement with the Gaza disengagement plan, which has proved once and for all that land does not bring peace. We trust that you will not cede any of Israel’s land to the Palestinians and will maintain the position that we hold the land of Israel in trust for future generations.

Further, we hope and pray that you will do everything in your power to bring Gilad Shalit home as soon as possible. He has suffered long enough at the hands of Hamas, and it is vital that this young man be given the opportunity to once again live life as a free man. We therefore encourage you to take a hard line approach and keep the Gaza crossings closed pending his return home. It is also critical that you keep working on behalf of all of Israel’s MIA’s whose fate remain uncertain.

Additionally, we hope that when you meet with President Obama you will directly ask the President to commute Jonathan Pollard’s prison sentence. We know that you are aware of all of the legal factors that favor commutation, but, in addition, Jonathan is in poor health, having developed a number of medical ailments while in prison. It is time to set Jonathan Pollard free and send him home Israel.

Finally, we are well aware of the fact that Iran and its nuclear proliferation is an issue that will command a great deal of your attention as Prime Minister. With its stated desire to obliterate the Israel, Iran poses a clear and imminent danger that must be addressed. Israel and you are in all of our prayers with the hope that you will be able to deal with Iran swiftly and forcefully to blunt the threat that it poses to your citizenry and our nation.

We wish you much bracha and hatzlacha and sincerely hope that your journey as Prime Minster is a smooth and successful one.

Very truly yours,

Shlomo Z. Mostofsky, Esq.
President

Rabbi Pesach Lerner
Executive Vice President
