lag-baomerOnce again, the Zaka Rescue and Recovery volunteer organization are ready for the tens of thousands who are expected to participate in this weekend’s annual Lag Ba’Omer celebrations on Mount Meron, the resting place of Rav Shimon Bar Yochai. Working in cooperation with the local council, the Israel Police and the Hesdei Shabtai organization, ZAKA will launch a multi-faceted safety campaign:

– Tens of thousands of identification wristbands will be distributed for children (with their name and contact details of family members)
– A special hotline for missing children and adults (1220 from any phone) will be manned by ZAKA volunteers throughout the Lag Ba’Omer celebrations.
– A special, two-room center for lost children, with games and equipment for them to pass the time until they are reunited with their families (open continuously from Friday morning through to Sunday at midnight)
– A dedicated area for administering emergency first aid

Several ZAKA all terrain vehicles and ambulances have been brought to the area to help in the search for missing family members.

In addition, ZAKA and Hertz are once again launching a joint road safety campaign under the banner: ‘Go in peace; return in peace. On Lag Ba’Omer, we also drive differently.’ The campaign includes ads and posters, brochures, song sheets for Lag Ba’Omer with driving safety rules and even refreshment stands along the roads leading to Mount Meron.

ZAKA Chairman Yehuda Meshi-Zahav: “ZAKA’s Lag Ba’Omer safety and accident prevention campaign has proven itself in previous years in reducing injuries around the bonfires, reducing accidents on the road caused by fatigue and reuniting lost children with their families. We call on all families to act and drive responsibly during Lag Ba’Omer, wherever they are celebrating.”
