Over the course of three years, Facebook has reportedly spent $43.4 million on Mark Zuckerberg’s personal security, while the family’s foundation, Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), has been providing financial support to activist groups advocating for defunding the police. According to the New York Post, CZI has donated at least $5.5 million to liberal organizations associated with defunding or even abolishing the police.

Among the reported donations made by CZI to anti-policing activist groups are:

  • A $3 million contribution to PolicyLink, the organization behind DefundPolice.org, which aims to reduce the influence of policing in communities and promote alternative approaches to public safety.
  • A $2.5 million donation to Solidaire, an organization involved in the “Anti-Police Terror Project,” which seeks to defund the police. Solidaire claims credit for successfully removing $18 million from the Oakland Police Department’s budget.

Solidaire also supports the Movement for Black Lives, a coalition of 150 activist groups that has expressed the view that the police neither ensure public safety nor prevent or stop crime. In a press release, the coalition stated, “Pouring more money into the system of policing only threatens the very lives they’re purported to protect.”

Meanwhile, Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is reportedly increasing its pre-tax spending on private security, raising it from $10 million in previous years to $14 million in 2023. This information is based on February company filings cited in the report. The Zuckerberg-Chan family, which includes three daughters, allocated $27 million for their overall security program in 2021, according to the NY Post.
