California lawmakers have approved a measure that would make the state the first to impose a statewide ban on single-use plastic bags.
SB270 cleared the Senate on a 22-15 vote Friday and sent to Gov. Jerry Brown. It was approved by the Assembly a day earlier.
Senators who had previously opposed the bill, including incoming Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon, a Los Angeles Democrat, this time supported the measure after protections were added for plastic bag manufacturers. Read more.

The State of CA is going to pot in a hand basket and they’re worried about plastic bags??? CA is bankrupt!

The State of California passed this law in order to save the millions it spends each year cleaning up plastic bags from the environment and paying for landfill space to dispose of them. California taxpayers have, in effect, been paying to subsidize the plastic bag makers. this isn’t “tree-hugging green,” this is just plain old saving taxpayers’ money.

Actually it isn’t. Under the leadership of Jerry Brown and the Democratic legislature, California has a budget surplus for the second year in a row.
Now, what will they find to ban next?
