chicago policeAttorney General Loretta Lynch is expected to announce this week that the Justice Department will launch an investigation into the Chicago Police Department, according to law enforcement officials familiar with the probe.

The inquiry will focus on whether the department routinely violates civil rights as well as the use of deadly force by officers.

The expected announcement follows the federal investigation into last year’s fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, who was shot and killed by an officer.

Recently released dashcam footage of the incident incited protests, prompting calls for a federal investigation and culminating with the firing of Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy. Officer Jason Van Dyke was also charged with first-degree murder in the shooting. Read more at Chicago Tribune.
