Former First Lady Laura Bush will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming annual Yeshiva Beth Yehudah dinner at the downtown Detroit Marriott Hotel.
The yeshiva dinner, scheduled for October 28, will honor Gary Shiffman, chairman and chief executive officer of Sun Communities, Inc., a publicly traded Real Estate Investment Trust listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
Gary and his wife Lisa, through active participation locally, nationally and internationally in various organizations, have tried to make a difference wherever he can. It is through their direct involvement that they hope to instill the value of “giving back” and to encourage the next generation, just as he in turn, was encouraged by the previous generation. The Shiffmans have been married for 32 years, reside in West Bloomfield, Michigan, and have three sons, Matthew, 28; Alex, 25; and Adam, 23.
The evening’s guest speaker, Laura Lane Welch Bush, was born on November 4, 1946, and is the wife of the 43rd president of the United States, George W. Bush. She was the First Lady from January 20, 2001, to January 20, 2009.
Polled by Gallup as one of the most popular first ladies, Laura Bush was involved in both national and global concerns during her tenure. Laura was born in Midland, Texas, the only child of Harold Welch and Jenna Louise Hawkins Welch. She met George W. Bush in July 1977 and they were married on November 5 of that year.
Yeshiva Beth Yehudah is the largest Jewish school system in Michigan, providing quality Torah-based chinuch for close to 100 years. Under its guidance, nearly 800 students in nursery through grade 12 receive an excellent foundation to become future leaders of the Jewish community.
