After asbestos-related material fell from the Madison Square Garden ceiling during maintenance work Monday night, the Knicks’ game scheduled for tonight has been postponed, Garden officials said. The issue arose while the ceiling was being cleaned overnight. Officials said that the game was being postponed “out of an abundance of caution” and that the Garden would not open until city inspectors and independent experts determined it was safe.
“Following last night’s [hockey] game, during overnight maintenance of Madison Square Garden, which included cleaning asbestos-related materials in the attic above the ceiling, some debris fell into the arena,” Garden officials said in a statement.
The statement said two companies had been called in to determine how to proceed with clearing the asbestos.
