Ocean Parkway has the dubious honor of being named 2013’s “deadliest street for walking” by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign.
According to the new study, six of the 132 pedestrian deaths recorded in the borough between 2009 and 2011 took place on Ocean Parkway. For an instructive visual, here’s an alarmingly packed map of all the places Brooklynites have been killed while attempting to stroll down the street.
Eastern Parkway is the borough’s second most dangerous road, followed by King’s Highway.
According to News12, the watchdog group said streets would generally be made safer with “proper road improvements and increased traffic enforcement.”

How do we make the streets less congested? Do we torture motorists to make them give up on driving? How about building more modern highways! Make Belt Parkway wider and faster. Maybe build a highway cutting across Brooklyn. A couple of highways across Manhattan + making West Side an actual highway, would take away most motorists out of Manhattan’s streets. Of course, it won’t happen. Not with the Bloomberg’s bicycle agenda. Meanwhile, drivers and pedestrians continue to suffer.
That is freaky! I pass there every day! I guess I better be much more careful!
All the research of the past 20 years demonstrates clearly more roads and wider roads actually cause increased congestion and traffic rather than reduce it. Worst still the incidence of traffic accidents and deaths increases as well.
