It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Refoel Yitzchok Schechter zt”l of Lakewood, NJ. Rav Schechter was a noted talmid chochom and rebbi who, approximately eight years ago, became seriously ill. He endured tremendous yissurim during that period, displaying remarkable gevurah as his choshuveh rebbetzin, children and family likewise demonstrated incredible strength and bitachon. Rav Schechter’s pure neshamah returned to the Yeshiva Shel Maalah overnight. He was 51.
Rav Schechter, prior to his illness, had served as a maggid shiur at Yeshiva Peer Hatorah in Lakewood.
Rav Schechter was a son of Rabbi and Mrs. Herzel Schechter of Yerushalayim. His wife, Mrs. Sora Schechter, a menaheles at Bais Yaakov High School of Lakewood, is a daughter of Rav Chaim Dov Keller, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Telshe-Chicago.
Rav Schechter is survived by his devoted wife, as well as nine children and grandchildren who follow in his ways of chashivus haTorah, hasmodas haTorah, humility and unwavering avodas Hashem. He also leaves behind both his parents and three brothers and three sisters, who are joined by the Lakewood kehillah and Yidden all over the globe who mourn the passing of this ish choshuv, a special individual who touched many people during his lifetime and served as a role model for countless others.
The levaya will take place at Yeshiva Yesodei Hatorah, located at 2 Yesodei Court in Lakewood, NJ, at 10 a.m. Kevurah will take place in Eretz Yisroel. The levaya in Yerushalayim will take place tomorrow at Rav Dovid Soloveitchik’s yeshiva on Rechov Grossberg at about 1:30 p.m. Kevurah will follow at Har Hamenuchos.
Yehi zichro boruch.
