Some of the top ten traffic bottlenecks in the New York City areaare not in the five boroughs, but those roads that go around them, according to a new study.
“It’s those areas where people are trying to get home, as well as get to a mall, get to a family friend,” said Mitchell Moss, director of NYU’s Rudin Center for Transportation Policy & Management, which compiled the study based on U.S. transportation statistics.
Among the ten worst traffic spots are the Hutchinson River Parkway in Westchester County (from the Cross-County Parkway to Mamaroneck Road), the Pulaski Skyway north of the Holland Tunnel, the northbound FDR Drive, Henry Hudson Parkway and two different sections of the Major Deegan Expressway during evening rush.
“The Whitestone Expressway northbound around exit 14 at Lincoln Place, another bottleneck. So, it’s not the core of Manhattan where the traffic worst. It’s really on the outskirts,” Moss told WCBS 880 reporter Marla Diamond.
Also on the list is I-84 near Waterbury, Connecticut; the I-95 (Cross Bronx Expressway) headed towards New Jersey; and the Connecticut Turnpike in New Haven.
Here is the full list in no particular order:
- Whitestone Expressway: Exit 14/Linden Place to Whitestone Bridge (When to avoid: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Hutchinson Parkway: Cross-Country Parkway to Mamaroneck Road (When to avoid: 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.)
- Pulaski Skyway: I-95 to Tonnelle Avenue (When to avoid: 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.)
- I-84 near Waterbury, Conn.: Interstate 691 to Austin Road (When to avoid: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Major Deegan Expressway: Van Cortlandt Park to I-95 (When to avoid: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
- I-95 in the Bronx/Manhattan: Exit 13/Conner Street to Fort Lee, N.J. (When to avoid: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Conn. Turnpike in New Haven: Marsh Hill Road to Ella Grasso Blvd (When to avoid: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Major Deegan Expressway: I-278 to I-95 (When to avoid: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
- FDR Drive 34th Street to 116th Street (When to avoid: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Henry Hudson Parkway: 72nd Street to George Washington Bridge (When to avoid: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.)
“Nine out of ten Americans who are traveling during the holiday season long distance, do so by car,” he told Marla Diamond.
In fact, AAA expects this week to be one of the busiest on the roads in a decade.
