Yerushalayim and Bnei Brak, two strongholds of Israel’s charedi population, account for 37 percent of the country’s coronavirus deaths, according to official figures.

“We thought it would be bad for the Charedi community, but not this bad,” Tehila Kalagy, a Charedi academic who studies health policy in her community, told The Times of Israel on Sunday, calling the figures “quite surprising.”

Like many analysts, Kalagy believes that the ultra-Orthodox in Israel suffered badly because it was slow to adopt social distancing, and because people tend to live in large families and close-knit communities, where infection can spread quickly.

Beit Shemesh, which also has a large population of charedi residents, has the fourth-most cases of coronavirus.

  1. These days when those dying of corona – with 70% unfortunately religious Jews – I wonder if it’s the anti-Semites behind it or……? I can’t help but think of the murdered Jews like: Professor Yaakov Yisrael Dehan, R’ Pinchas Sagalov, Rabbi Uzi Meshulam, R’ Moshe Blau, 9/11 explosives, innocent Jews being tortured in Israeli prisons, the 18 Jews on the Irgun Ship, Altalena.

    • Arieh Deri stated the emmes, however uncomfortable it is. Charedim instead of taking to heart Deri’s message of doing an honest חשבון הנפש, they become defensive and blame others like Just Wonderin’ above.
